Why so serious

Let’s imagine a scene. You pick yourself out of your bed, bumble over to the window, look out and see a monochrome sky with the first drops of rain welcoming you to another dreary day. You think of the monotonous tasks lying in wait, mutter a curse or two and don’t look forward to what lies ahead.

You punch the remote, listen to the news telling you about war, rising inflation, unemployment and a whole slew of misery. A smile whickers on your lips though when you see your favourite team won last night. Yet that bounces back into ennui as you throw down your breakfast with alacrity, have a speed wash, throw on your work clothes and look to the ground as you commute to work.

Let’s imagine a scene again. You get up an hour earlier today. You think of three things your grateful for, have a quick check in meditation with yourself and tell yourself to fire up your energy. Hey, it’s cloudy and raining, but you know, that’s great. Those plants in the garden need watering and nature’s just saved you a job. You’ve got things to do today, but fine, you’ve plenty of enthusiasm and reckon you’ll have most of it done early doors and will have a chill out at work and a good laugh with everyone later.

You get your breakfast all laid out and savour every mouthful. You settle down with a good book, today it’s the keeper of the stories which is rather entertaining. You play some gentle music in the background and take a good hour to ease yourself into the day before trotting off to work. You walk up the street, look up to the skies to feel water bouncing off your face. It feels so invigorating and reminds you of who you are. You quite like that.

Same scenario, two perspectives. Here in lies the dilemma of life doesn’t it? We find ourselves quite often in that first scene. I’m not saying for a minute that we can be bouncing like Tigger every day or promoting toxic positivity but it does come to us to make the best of what we’ve got and to try and cultivate that optimism where we can.

When those dark days call (and they will) that’s the time we might need to hunker down a bit but always remembering that we can and will get back to ourselves. The first scenario is nothing like who we really are at heart but more the way we are influenced by so many converging external forces moulding us into this version that we think we need to muddle through. What we truly are is this brilliant expression of light and to try to stay in that state as much as possible.

So, as your days, weeks and months unfold try to offset those moments which knock your energy down with moments that uplift your energy. Let’s imagine you go into work and find the tea machine isn’t working, then think ok, I’ll take a trip to the local shop and get myself a drink there then and work can’t stop me as I’m entitled to a drink. Yes, a silly simple example but that’s the best way to start. Start making a few ripples first and if you continue in this vein then just maybe those ripples can become waves that might just enhance your life.

Take care everyone and have a beautiful day.
