Kill Bill. I’m sure when you see those words at the start of this article you’ll be thinking is Gary going to go down the road of his visceral fiction and have us cowering in the corner behind a sofa. Not at all my dear readers, for in this film there is a marvellous little track called the Lonely Shepherd. I find this music very haunting and also uplifting.
Imagine if you will, this shepherd sitting down on rolling hills in some distant continent whilst he pulls out his panpipes and begins to play. Beautiful melodies stream forth and he is in his own place of wonder where the only audience he has are his flock, possibly his dog and any other wildlife flitting to and fro.
Why the scenario I hear you ask? Well, think of it, many of us put down our thoughts and reasons and we find ourselves often talking to ourselves. It can be maddening can’t it? Yet, if we place ourselves in the guise of our dear old shepherd we begin to realise that what really matters is the state of joy we may or may not find ourselves in when we set to our work.
Of course we would love to share what we do with many, but it is a vagary that most of us never feel the urge to like or comment on whatever medium we so happen to stumble across. This could be Youtube videos, a post or a mere moment of creativity you happen to witness. It is at this point that some may feel what is the point and I’d say, if the process of creative endeavour has brought you joy then pray do continue.
We are in a world where we are obsessed with numbers, followers and likes. Do you honestly think that our dear shepherd cares for any of that? I’d fancy he is there enjoying that sweet beautiful moment of being in his state of flow with all around him. He is making his music and in a state of rapture with his humble audience.
Let us too, seek to embrace that same energy. If you’re finding yourself creating for the sake of creation and feeling no happiness at all, then stop. Find what does echo within you and allow that to be your purpose.
If on the other hand you are love creating work that doesn’t seem to get any attention at all then do continue. There is a belief that’s been spouted that you should create for you audience. Whilst I subscribe that you ought to listen, ultimately, ought we not to be somewhat greedy and create for ourselves for in that space we are in flow. We are basking in our uniqueness and there I fancy is the domain of true happiness and creativity.
So, go forward, be yourself and if you happen to have one or one million watching you remember there is only one you are answerable to. That my dear reader, is you.
