Hello dear friends and I shall type my latest thoughts in the evening for a change. It’s been quite a pleasant day at the Shakra Centre and a fine way to spend my Friday. Anyway, let’s first give deep gratitude, kudos and love to Anna, Shilpa, Jo, Russell, Tracy and Deborah for taking a trip by my blog yesterday. Thank you very much everyone and it’s a pleasure to have you all stop by and say hello.
My thoughts today turn to the joy of reading. Now I know there are many films, videos, posts and so forth to occupy our minds and yet none of them quite have that immersive feel of a good book to take you into a whole new world. There are many great books for us to lose ourselves in and truly it’s quite the pleasure to wander through the dreamscape of someone else’s imagination.
For me, the ultimate escapism romp has to be Lord Of The Rings. I do love my fantasy and remember when I first read this book when I guess I was around seventeen. That would have been around 1985 and the world was rather different then from now. I recall however when a college friend extolled the virtues of a world made by Tolkein. I thought, hmm, why not, let’s give this book a read.
Until then, my preferred medium of reading was that of horror. I enjoyed Stephen King, James Herbert and Graham Masterton and it was quite a departure when I embarked upon this odyssey. I have to say that was the moment when I realised what imagination can wrought upon us when a work such as this comes to light. I was captivated. After a bit of a slow and dare I say childish start (well, that’s what I thought at the time, especially with Tom Bombadil who I could not warm to at all) I found myself immersed in an epic journey of friendship, betrayal, sacrifice, redemption and so much more.
The novel hooked me completely and the ending with the Scouring Of The Shire really brought forward that bitter sweet ending. Truly a masterpiece that probably would never be printed today with all the self indulgence, but that for me is what made it work. The appendices were brimmed with facts, stories and a compunction to find out more. It’s such a shame that The films of Peter Jackson (which I totally enjoyed) left out the Scouring Of The Shire, it was a missed opportunity there.
For me, the current book I’m reading is Star Mother. A departure and a fun read to pass the time. I will give my verdict when I get myself to finishing this little nugget. I’ve also finished watching the Rings Of Power which I guess is ok and so many people were very disappointed. I can understand why as they’ve taken a lot of liberties and some of the storyline is a bit silly with characters dropped in (especially with these hobbits which feel like they’ve just been dropped in to somehow rekindle the Lord Of The Rings, just doesn’t work for me), but I still found it oddly compelling. I guess I am a big fan of fantasy, even if it could and should have been so much better.
Anyhow, enough from me today. What’s your fave book at the moment? Perhaps you don’t read and prefer to watch a film or keep yourself entertained but you are missing out if you don’t. Remember everyone, do keep reading.
Things to be grateful for.
1. A splendid development evening
2. A fine day at the Centre
