Should we compete?

Hello dear friends. The hour is in darkness and the rain did ease for a bit as I espy a resplendent moon offering it's luminosity to all and sundry. Without further ado I wish to impart love and kudos to Anna, Jo, Shilpa and Colleen (LinkedIn) for stopping by on my previous post and sharing, commenting, liking and loving the words I had put together.

When we are brought up we are taught that competition is healthy. It is an essential tenet of modern day society and we are to believe that to be successful we have to be better than the competition. It is acknowledged that we have to defeat those around us to thrive and the adage survival of the fittest is a wise doctrine to follow.

My post today is not to say this is incorrect. However, I do believe that it's healthy to look at a different perspective. If we look around and see the propagation of defined success we ought to acknowledge that for there to be a winner there must be a loser. It is the balance and yet I wonder if we become so obsessed with winning then we cast aside those who are vanquished.

Take yourself back to your old school days and where you may well have been dashing around in a race. For those who won there would be the plaudits of victory and for those who came in towards the end, nothing more than derision and scorn. In my older years I do ask myself is this truly healthy? Would it not be wiser to be respectful to all of us as opposed to the elevation of the chosen few? Is this reflected in our modern society where the winners in life are promoted to high status and the rest to the ranks of plebeians and non-entities?

What if there was no competition? What if instead, we had an existence where sport was not centred about the winning and losing but instead the progress of our physical and spiritual advancement? I realise there are many questions being posed here and I know there will be conflicting views from all sides but it is good I feel to analyse this aspect. I doubt we will ever be in a position to initiate such a paradigm shift but maybe one day humanity may look to another way of existing.

Of course, competition is nothing new. Look back to ancient times and old conflicts and the saying "Vae Victus" (woe to the conquered) on how the losers were made to pay for their failures. When you look at armed conflict is it not some machismo dalliance of differing egos to promote their cause? Look at the great dictators from ancient times to today and you will see a slew of characters determined to make their mark on history for what they believe is the spirit of victory for their cause.

I know many will disagree with the statements above. I'm not saying either side is correct or incorrect but merely that we should ask ourselves what we believe is the right way forward. For me, I will say that for us to evolve as a species we perhaps need to elevate ourselves away from individualistic ego trips and combine in a unity consciousness. Perhaps try a form of utopian Socialism and not the sorry phantoms of this idea that have been tried before or are we doomed ever to be in a spiral of stepping over everyone else. What are your thoughts?
