Never mind that, just jump on the couch

Hello dear friends and it's looking rather grand out there. Methinks I may take a wander in a while but there's a German lesson and a few other things to take into account as well. Still, first up let's send out the love and kudos to Anna, Shilpa, Fabiola, Jo, Dawn and Vanessa for stopping on by my previous post(s) and sharing, liking, loving and commenting on.

Speaking is healing.

So take the time to discuss

What is causing hurt.

My thoughts today turn to those little healing sessions we may have taken over the years. You may go along all eager to leap onto the couch and when you fill in the form you're all impatient. Some of us therapists go along with the desires of our client to "get on with it" and yet that's missing a trick.

It's rather important to have a good discussion first with your client before they jump on and ask you to zap them. Taking the time to have a solid talk about what brings them to you is a real chance for them to begin their own healing journey. It's quite a skill for us to allow them to speak and get to the bottom of what the real issue is. They may come for a treatment on a sore arm for example but what's really bothering them is an issue at home that they've neglected. Chances are, if they'd just hurled their body onto the couch you'd never had the opportunity to address that.

Of course the healing itself is important. However, once that's done don't rush the final part either. This is where we get the chance to allow the recipient to disclose what came from the session. It's very empowering for them and gives you the opportunity to discuss what may come forward. It's also tricky for the therapist too, you might get shown certain issues and then it's your call whether to disclose or not. You may choose not to and that's fine as our words can disempower as well as empower. The main thing is to be in a state of empathy, kindness and flow and don't overcomplicate things.

So there we are, just a few thoughts for today and I will gear myself up for this evening's development group. It's always a nice way to spend an evening with some fab people and bring forth the fun and mirth. Take care all and remember, keep reading.
